Nigeria University Facts

This post brings to you facts about universities in Nigeria. Some of these facts are actually obsure. Expect more on this topic later.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was designed by an Isreali architect Arieh Sharon. He designed many buildings in Isreal. He was a foremost architect who won the Isreali Prize for Architecture in 1962. You may want to visit here for more architectural details about OAU.

Federal University of  Technology Yola (FUTY) has been renamed Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH). Modibbo Adama was the founder of Fombina Kingdom (Adamawa Emirate Council).

Tafawa Balewa University (in Bauchi, Bauchi State) actually belongs in the ‘university of technology’ category. Many prospective university students are not aware of this fact because it has no ‘technology’ in its nomenclature.

The only university in Nigeria that offers a program in metereology is Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State. Though, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUSTECH), Enugu State offers a program in geography and metereology.

University of Benin (UNIBEN) was actually a state university. In 1975, it became a federal university at the request of the state.

Nigeria has 3 federal universities of agriculture:                                                                  
1) Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State
                       
2) University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State
                                             
3) Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Umuahia, Abia State.

The 9 new federal Universities established by President Goodluck Jonathan are:                                          
Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State

Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State                                                     

Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State                                               

Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State                                                        

Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State                                             

Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State                                                     

Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State

Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State

Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State

Grace Alele-Williams was Nigeria’s first female vice-chancellor. She was vice-chancellor of UNIBEN from 1985-1991. She got her doctorate in Mathematics Education from the University of Chicago in 1963. The present vice-chancellor of University of Uyo (UNIYO) Prof. (Mrs) Comfort Memfin Ekpo is a female—the second ever.

Federal universities with no catchment areas are the 3 federal agriculture universities listed above, University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), University of Ibadan (UI), University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT), Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE).

The only university that offers a program in archeology is University of Ibadan (UI).

At present, Nigeria has more private universities than state universities (24 state unis and 40 private unis). It should be noted that these numbers are ever changing.

Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) is usually referred to as the only university of education in Nigeria. This is wrong. There is another one called Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Port-Harcourt, River. Both are state universites. TASUED was established in 2005 while IAUE came into existence in 2009.
